Homeowner shot and injured in a break-in on Gertrude Street

Three-armed suspects broke into a property on Gertrude Street, shooting and injuring the homeowner before fleeing.

Late at night in the quiet suburb of Randpark, a violent break-in devastated the calm on Gertrude Street as three-armed suspects targeted a well-secured property, approaching from the back where visibility was limited.

Despite the presence of surveillance cameras and an electric fence, the intruders managed to breach the perimeter by forcefully removing panels of the concrete wall. They sneaked behind the trees and waited till the lights were off to enter the house.

The suspects moved in quickly and were disturbed by the loud barking of the dogs that woke up the homeowner, Yeagan Naiker.

Inside the house in the dark, they encountered Naiker, and one of the suspects opened fire, injuring the homeowner.

“I opened my door, and I saw there’s a guy standing in the spare bedroom door. Everything was dark because I always have all my lights off. I had a little axe with me. So, when I raised the axe, the guy fired the shot, the first shot. And then they fired two more shots after that, and they ran out the sliding door,” he said.

The sound of gunfire woke the neighbours, but the attackers fled the scene immediately. Beyond the fence is dense, overgrown brush, which was a perfect cover for their escape.

Emergency services were called, and the injured homeowner received medical attention. The police were called, and a case was opened at Linden Police Station.

“They [police] said they’re going to investigate. I wouldn’t hold my breath for all those investigations, because there’s nothing that ever comes of them. This is not the first time this has happened on this property. This is the third time since 2017.”

He said that the other two incidents were similar. “They broke in. They always enter from the back of that wall where the bush is thick. They broke the panels and came through there all three times.”
