Four organisations unite to serve Zandspruit community

Four organisations came together in Zandspruit this weekend, sharing meals, clothing, and prayer with residents in a community outreach that began before sunrise and left a lasting impression on all who took part.

Four organisations joined hands in Zandspruit this past weekend to bring food, clothing, prayer, and a quiet reminder that compassion is something you do, not something you say.

The outreach began well before sunrise, with volunteers gathering at 03:00 to sort donated clothing into piles by gender and age and to prepare meals that would later be shared with residents across the informal settlement.

Sanele Mkhize, of the Sunflower Organisation, who helped lead the effort, said the early start set the tone for everything that followed. “Friends joined, and a calm, Christian atmosphere settled as we prayed and focused on our mission. We were there to share God’s love in action.”

Moving from house to house, the group encountered a range of responses. Some doors stayed closed, as not every resident was willing to engage, but many opened their homes and their hearts, and the volunteers made the most of every such moment. People shared their personal stories, received prayer, and were handed meals, sanitary pads, and, in some cases, Bibles.

Mkhize said the team made careful note of those who might need a return visit. “Some needed Bibles, others received sanitary pads, and all of them were touched by the meals we shared. We noted those who need future support, because this kind of work does not end when the day does.”

It was in the faces of the people they met, she said, that the impact became most visible. “We saw it in their smiles, hope rising in the simple acts of giving.”

For Mkhize, the heart of the day came down to something simple but profound. “It is about seeing each person’s worth, meeting them with dignity, and showing them that love is, above all, a doing word.”

The outreach was made possible by four organisations working towards a single goal: The Sunflower Organisation, the Thabiso Mogodiri Foundation, Godly Community, and Peu Ya Mohau Organisation. Each brought something different to the effort, but all of them left Zandspruit carrying the same shared conviction.
