Mokoena penalty rescues point for Bafana

Fans at Phoenix Bar on Main Avenue celebrated as Teboho Mokoena's late penalty earned Bafana Bafana a 1-1 draw against Czechia.

Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw didn’t pull the crowds at Phoenix Bar on Main Avenue, with fewer than 10 fans turning up to watch the match. Despite the small numbers, those who did show up were full of praise for the team’s performance.

Andisiwe Majola, one of the fans at the watch party, said the result showed what Bafana Bafana could achieve when they played their natural game. She said the team came agonisingly close to taking all three points and put in a performance to be proud of.

Fellow fan Refiloe Sithole echoed the sentiment, saying the team needed to build on this momentum going forward. She said the only way for Bafana Bafana was up from here, and that their display gave fans plenty of reason for optimism.

Although the turnout was modest compared to other watch parties around Randburg this World Cup season, the small group at Phoenix Bar made up for it in spirit, cheering the team on through every twist of the match. The result leaves Bafana Bafana with plenty to build on as the tournament continues, and fans like Majola and Sithole will be hoping for bigger crowds and bigger results in the matches still to come.
