Rand Water maintenance set to hit Joburg suburbs hard on Friday
Residents across multiple northern and western Johannesburg areas are being urged to stock up on water ahead of a full-day bulk supply disruption this Friday.
Johannesburg Water has issued a fresh reminder to customers that Rand Water will carry out the second and final phase of critical planned maintenance on Friday, 17 July. The work is scheduled to run from 07:00 to 19:00, a 12-hour window that will significantly reduce pumping capacity into several major supply systems.
Nombuso Shabalala of Johannesburg Water said customers supplied by the Sandton, Midrand and Randburg systems will experience low water pressure to no water for the duration of the 12-hour maintenance. Residents are further encouraged to store enough water for essential household use ahead of the maintenance. Johannesburg Water will provide regular updates throughout the maintenance period.

The affected systems serve a wide swathe of the city, including busy suburbs like Sandton, Midrand, Randburg and other areas such as Roodepoort and Soweto, as well as areas such as Linksfield, South Hills, Crown Gardens, Brixton, Crosby, Hurst Hill and Lenasia. Many households can expect noticeably low pressure or complete cut-offs while the essential electrical and infrastructure upgrades take place at the Zuikerbosch substation.
Local authorities stress that full pressure is unlikely to return immediately once the maintenance ends. Reservoirs will need time to recover, and normal service could take several days to stabilise depending on demand.
Practical tips for residents
Johannesburg Water is advising people to fill clean containers with tight lids and store them in a cool, dark place. Use stored water wisely, prioritise drinking, cooking and basic hygiene, and avoid watering gardens, washing cars or other non-essential activities.

Tankers will be deployed where needed, with priority given to schools, clinics and homes for the elderly. Exact locations will be shared closer to the time through official channels and ward councillors.
This latest maintenance forms part of Rand Water’s broader efforts to reinforce the region’s bulk water infrastructure, aiming for greater long-term reliability for millions of Gauteng residents.
