Quava Vocal Group held its Bokamoso: A Future Sound concert at Fontainebleau Community Church on July 31 at 19:00.

Show member Nomndeni Nkabinde described it as both a tribute to the choir’s history and a step into something new.

Speaking ahead of the performance, Nkabinde said the concert carried deep meaning for the group. “Bokamoso represents a fresh start for Quava. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, while staying true to who we are.”

She was quick to credit those who came before her. “The generations of Quava members before us built a strong foundation and a culture of excellence that continues to shape the choir today.”

Preparing for the show had not been easy, but the hard work brought its own excitement. “Rehearsing for Bokamoso has honestly felt like preparing for our very first concert. It’s been demanding, but incredibly exciting at the same time.”

Among the highlights was a song called Limu Limu Lima. “Limu Limu Lima has moments where the harmonies lock together so perfectly that they create beautiful overtones. It’s one of those magical moments that gives you goosebumps.”

Now in her third year with the choir, Nkabinde said Quava has become far more than a musical commitment. “The music drew me in, but the people are what have kept me here. Quava has truly become my home.

“Being part of Quava has taught me that my voice doesn’t have to fit into a box. It has shown me that I’m capable of so much more musically than I ever imagined.”

When asked whether she had faced any major setbacks in the lead-up to the concert, Nkabinde kept her answer brief. “Not really.”

Still, stepping into this new phase had not been without its challenges. “It’s been incredibly exciting, but it’s also come with a steep learning curve. Every step has helped us grow.

“We’re still staying true to the original Quava sound, but we’re adding a few fresh touches that reflect where we are now.”

Reflecting on the concert, Nkabinde said she hoped audiences left feeling revived, inspired, and full of hope. For Nkabinde, that message of hope felt especially important, given what many in the community were facing at the time. “Our community needs hope. With the challenges we face, especially around service delivery, people need something that reminds them there’s still beauty, goodness, and a brighter future worth believing in.”

She encouraged residents in the area to support homegrown talent, rather than looking elsewhere for world-class entertainment. “We have a world-renowned choir right here in our own backyard. You don’t have to travel across the world to experience something extraordinary, you just have to come and hear Quava live.”

Reflecting on what Bokamoso means for the choir’s journey, Nkabinde said it builds on nearly two decades of growth. “Bokamoso is the beginning of something special. It’s a new chapter built on the strong foundation that Quava has laid over the past 17 years.”
