Repairs have finally resumed on a section of Malibongwe Drive after months of delays, which Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) attributed to contractual disputes.

Months ago, workers dug up a section of the road for what appeared to be a resurfacing project. The site was subsequently left in a poor state, affecting motorists, residents and nearby businesses. Instead of a smoother road, drivers faced potholes, loose gravel and an uneven surface that became increasingly unsafe. The damaged road caused vehicle damage, traffic congestion and excessive dust.

JRA head of infrastructure development Kwazelela Mcetywa explained that a contractor was appointed, but repairs were halted due to contractual issues. However, the contractor has returned to the site to undertake temporary maintenance along the affected section. “They are patching and filling potholes, sweeping and removing loose stones, and implementing all necessary measures to improve road safety and minimise the risk of damage to vehicles,” Mcetywa said, adding that the entity apologised to road users for the inconvenience.

Questions were sent to JRA on September 10 regarding the estimated repair timeline, whether the fixes are temporary or permanent, and if the contract issues have been resolved. Their response will be updated as soon as it is received.
