Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala has confirmed that repair work on the major burst affecting a 500mm water pipeline at the corner of Puttick Avenue and C.R. Swart Drive in Sundowner is continuing.

She explained that water has been drained from the affected pipeline, and the team has located the leak. “The team is currently awaiting a welder to begin the required welding work.”

Shabalala added that customers in the affected areas will remain without water supply for the duration of the repairs, and that there is currently no estimated time of restoration, though further updates will be provided as the repair work progresses.

Affected areas include parts of Sundowner, Bush Hill Estate AH, Boskruin, Northwold, Randpark Ridge, Sharonlea, and Hunters Hill.

Puttick Avenue is currently closed as contractors have dug up the newly restored road to access the pipe.
Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp urged residents to avoid the area until the road is restored.

“We’re constantly monitoring, and we’re also chasing Johannesburg Water until they can give us concrete information.”

Steenkamp expressed concern about the reinstatement of the road, noting that such work usually takes a long time to complete.

“It’s a very busy road that has recently been resurfaced. As residents, we are quite heart-sore that a road that we’ve been fighting to get resurfaced because of so many potholes has now been destroyed to fix the burst,” he said.

“We understand that can happen anywhere, but also there’s a lack of maintenance, and that’s the frustrating part. You fix one thing, then something else breaks. We hope that the entity can restore this road once the repairs are done.”
