City Power tackles Randburg unplanned outages as calls top 800
Substation trips and cable failures leave thousands of local electricity users without supply across multiple distributors.
City Power is working through a cluster of unplanned outages across the Randburg Service Delivery Centre (SDC) area after several cable and earth faults left thousands of customers without power on September 23.
In an update issued at 07:50, the utility reported that the Randburg SDC currently has 821 open calls, of which 352 have been outstanding for more than 24 hours. The power system remains constrained, with customers urged to reduce electricity consumption to prevent further overload.

Four active outages are receiving attention. At the Houtkoppen substation on the Bellairs North distributor, teams are still repairing a subsequent cable fault that occurred after a trip during restoration attempts the previous day. The interruption continues to affect customers in Northriding and surrounding areas.
A second fault on the substation’s Conduit distributor caused an unplanned interruption in Jukskei Park and Johannesburg North. The test branch team was called in to locate the cable fault before repairs could begin.
In Bryanston, operators at the Brynorth substation on the Logan distributor have restored power to 97% of the affected area. A contractor is on site completing repairs to the remaining section.
Olivedale and nearby streets are also affected. The Jacaranda distributor at the Olivedale substation tripped on an earth fault, cutting supply to Olivedale, Meadowbrook Office Park, Meadowhurst, Jacaranda Avenue, Cedar Street, Kays Avenue and Cumberland Avenue. Operators have restored 98% of the supply and are working on the final portion.
