City Power is out of line

Derek Walker writes:

There has been a lot of publicity lately regarding City Power requiring access to properties to read meters. letter icon2

I have always telephoned in my meter readings on a monthly basis. This has worked so far. Last week I received from councilor David Potter an open letter from City Power managing director Sicelo Xulu requesting everyone to assist City Power to gain access to read meters.

With the letter was a schedule of dates when there would be someone coming to read the meters. Great, I thought, at least we know now when to expect them. There were also several methods of contact with them in case the date given was inconvenient. Even better, I thought.

The date given my area is 24 July. Imagine my bewilderment, when I returned home on 6 July at about 1 pm, to find a note on my gate stating that someone had been to read the meter! Luckily the guy had left his cell number so I was able to contact him and give him my details and meter reading.

Two days later I received an SMS message from City Power saying it wanted to read the meter. Again.

I contacted the City Power meter reading call centre on 011-490-7484 to make an appointment for them to get in. The phone rang for several minutes with no reply. I then e-mailed City Power and nobody bothered to confirm the date I had proposed.

Exactly how are we supposed to help City Power get the job done if its system of communication isn’t working? They send out date schedules they don’t stick to?

Suppose some idiot comes to read the meter, they can’t get in and cut me off. This is bad enough if I return to the house later that same day but if I am away overseas for a month? I would return to find the house burgled, because the alarm was off and a freezer full of rotten food. Who pays for that lot City Power? I think not.
