Pets are people too

When a domesticated pet comes into a human's life, it is there for life.

It offers lifetime companionship, have amazing characters, they never judge you, and they never complicate things, cheat on you, or steal from you.

An oft heard clichĂ© goes that people are acting like animals, and it’s meant in a pejorative sense. Would that most of humanity act like animals, verily if I were a dog I would be utterly insulted if someone said I was behaving like a human. We destroy everything around us and we are completely out of whack with nature.

This is why sometimes animal lovers are generally considered to be on the fringe of sane society because we put animals above humans. Most certainly when it comes to my pets I consider myself perhaps a little crazy. There won’t be a small enough space for the person to hide who hurts one of my cats. They eat better than I do, and certainly have access to much better medical care.

Our pets want so little from us. Food, water, a scratch and somewhere warm to sleep. We need to be responsible in our pet care by training dogs, offering them time and keeping them healthy. Chip them, collar them, spay and neuter them, secure your gardens and gates, and never let them run loose. Traffic in this city is dangerous, and the many carcasses of animals that litter roads are a vivid reminder.

Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment. It seems however that some pet owners have not signed the same contract as their pet. If you’re not prepared to make an effort, rather let it go to a good home.

They deserve that much, at least.
