Teams surprise on day 11 of World Cup

JOHANNESBURG – Algeria and USA surprise Korea Republic and Portugal. Share your views.

Algeria and the USA exceeded expectations on day 11 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, 22 and 23 June.

Before that, Belgium beat Russia 1 – 0 in a Group H-match which put them through to the round of 16.

Origi scored in the 88th minute, shooting hard over Russia’s keeper Akinfeev, after a pass by Hazard set him up.

Algeria then crushed Korea Republic (South Korea) 4 – 2 in group H, and became the first African side to score four goals in one world cup match.

Islam Slimani, Man of the Match, opened scoring for Algeria when he volleyed a shot over the approaching Korea Republic’s keeper Sungryoung in the 26th minute.

Halliche scored again for Algeria, finishing off a corner in the 28th minute.

Djabou tripled the lead in the 38th minute when he scored from 12m, off Slimani’s pass.

Heungmin scored for Korea Republic in the 50th minute, shooting through the legs of Algeria keeper Mbholi.

But Brahimi guaranteed Algeria’s win in the 62nd minute after good passing between him and Slimani set up his goal.

Jacheol scored Korea Republic’s second goal in the 72nd minute from a cross.

United States of America (USA) then surprised Portugal by drawing with them 2 – 2 in group G.

Nani scored for Portugal in the fifth minute, finishing well after America’s Cameron gave the ball away.

Jones equalised for the USA in the 64th minute, curving a shot in from 25m.

Dempsey put USA ahead in the 81st minute, scoring off a cross.

But Varela ensured a point for Portugal, heading from a corner in injury time.
