Crusaders’ title defence damaged after Stars of Africa loss at St Stithians

Crusaders lost to Stars of Africa during their recent Rand Central Local Football Association division 1 league match at St Stithians.

Crusaders’ hopes of retaining their Rand Central Local Football Association division 1 league title suffered a major setback, following a 5–3 defeat to Stars of Africa at St Stithians.

Crusaders went into the encounter looking to collect maximum points, but the visitors left Crusaders empty-handed, deepening their struggles in the league standings. The visitors struck early in the first half, with a goal from Yibanathi Struurman forcing Crusaders to fight their way back into the contest. The hosts responded with determination, finding a JJ Maluleka equaliser to keep the match finely balanced.

Even though Stars of Africa kept possession for most of the half, they were unable to capitalise on their chances. The second half, however, told a different story, with both teams coming back looking even hungrier for the win. Stars of Africa forward Tuto Segodi was left unmarked in the Crusaders box and made no mistake to put his team 2–1 up.

The home side refused to surrender, as Neo Magongwa’s brilliant solo effort levelled matters to restore the excitement of the encounter. The visitors took control of the game again, and their attacking pressure paid off as they added two more goals through Segodi and Thandolwethu Mtshali to establish a commanding 4–2 advantage.

Crusaders coach Lefa Makunyane admitted it was a tough result for his team. “We made errors at the back and gave them easy goals,” says Makunyane. “We also had a few opportunities we couldn’t convert. We will go back to training and fix and prepare for the next match.”
