Winter sports at Rand Park High
RANDPARK RIDGE – Budding young sports stars get a taste of high school.
Chilly weather did not stop Rand Park High School’s Winter Sports Day from taking place on 2 August. The school introduced young athletes to exactly what the school has on offer with an inter-primary play-off of hockey, netball and touch-rugby.
The idea behind the sports day, according to Rand Park High spokesperson Heather Robinson, is to invite budding young sport enthusiasts from Rand Park Primary, Weltevreden Park Primary, Charter House College and Constantia Kloof Primary, to participate in friendly matches against one another.
“The different teams are coached by our own high school netball, hockey and rugby players,” said Robinson. “This not only teaches our own players essential leadership skills, but also gives primary school athletes a taste of a possible future at Rand Park High.”
Players were awarded for their performances and the award for netball player of the day went to Madison Gordon of Charterhouse Preparatory, while Botlhale Mofokeng from Constantia Kloof Primary took the award for girls’ hockey player of the day.
Boys’ hockey player of the day title was a tie between Matthew Pretorius (Charterhouse College) and Michael Bailey (Weltevreden Park Primary). Connor Parkes from Weltevreden Park Primary received the trophy for best touch rugby player of the day.
“The boys played touch-rugby and hockey; and girls played netball and hockey,” concluded Robinson. “They played each sport, regardless of whether they had previous experience or not. This was both challenging and exciting, and the children competed with sheer enthusiasm.”
