CrossFitters work out for cancer

JUKSKEI PARK – Join fellow CrossFitters as they exercise in aid of those fighting cancer.

Sledgehammer CrossFit in Jukskei Park has joined the Heroes for Heroes campaign and have decided to workout for the homegrown heroes of Ependy Angels.

The Jukskei Park branch will raise funds for Ependy Angels by doing hero workouts. In the CrossFit community, they often commemorate fallen American military and service heroes by doing Hero Workouts; CrossFit is, after all, an American sport.

And so, the Heroes for Heroes campaign was born with the aim of raising awareness and funds for children with cancer – to celebrate, bring attention to, and raise funds for these little heroes.

Ependy Angels helps children with ependymoma, and their families, cope and survive with the burden and costs of the rare brain and spinal cancer, as well as raising much-needed awareness about these young heroes. The child that this foundation was originally created for, Layla, suffers from a particularly rare form of ependymoma. Layla is currently the only person in the world suffering from this particular form of ependymoma, making her treatment rare and also incredibly expensive.

Yet, her fearsome spirit is inspiring. Funds raised at this event will go towards her treatment, as well as the aid of other children suffering from similar forms of ependymoma that are supported by Ependy Angels.

Here is how you can support the cause:

1. Get in touch with Dominique at Sledgehammer CrossFit – dominiqueh@sledgehammercrossfit.co.za / 0766891851.

2. The buy in to participate is R100. Grab a sponsor sheet and get your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you. It can be a flat number for whatever workout you do or an amount per workout you do. The athlete with the most sponsorship money will get a prize too.

3. Pitch up at Sledgehammer CrossFit at 8am on 16 July in your gym clothes.

4. Bring your game face, engage beast mode.

5. Bring friends, family and colleagues to watch the carnage. Drinks and boerewors rolls will be on sale
