The much-anticipated Rio Olympics 2016 kicked off on 5 August, much to the delight of sports fanatics around the world. The South African team ranked 24 in the Olympics, won seven medals in total.
Wade van Niekerek did the country proud when he came first in the men’s final 400m run, winning the country its first gold medal. On day 11, South Africa has won five silver medals, one bronze and a gold medal collectively.
We asked residents if the South African team met their expectations, here is what they had to say:
ERICA VAN WALT: I would have loved to see more of our team competing in different sports, I really love the athletics team.
SHIRLEY CRANK: I feel its disappointing that the SABC doesn’t screen the Olympics for some of us who don’t have DSTV. I’ve heard about how the South African team is doing and I’m happy for them.
FRANCE SKHOSANA: I’m happy with the SA teams performance and I wish them the best of luck during the Olympics.
WENDY EWURUM: SA is doing well and I was very proud when I heard about Wade van Niekerk’s win. The SA team is definitely meeting my expectations although I feel sad for Chad le Clos’ loss because I feel he didn’t perform at his best.
ABRIE JURGENS: SA did awesome with their performance and the way they have been handling themselves is great. Although I think they could do better and choose better athletes to compete.
ISAAC THUSI: I’m not happy about the uniforms of the SA team, it is not up to standard. South Africa could have also done better in terms of the medals they’ve won so far.
GQELOSHA MSEBENZI: I believe the SA team is doing well and I’m very proud of them. They should keep excelling in what they are doing.
