A winter sports festival at Rand Park High School

Rand Park High School recently hosted its 5th Annual Winter Sports Festival for Grade 6 children from various neighbouring primary schools as they played netball, hockey and touch rugby.

The school’s communication officer, Heather Robinson explained the primary schools in attendance were Weltevreden Park, Randpark, Charterhouse, Blairgowrie, and Constantia Kloof.

Robinson said what makes this event so special is that it gives children a feel of the high school environment they will soon be part of.

“To complement that, we take the 1st team players from netball, hockey and touch rugby and make them team managers and coaches so that it develops their skills from a leadership and communication perspective,” said Robinson.

On the day, children participation was on a voluntary basis, so there were no school teams but rather mixed teams with various team names.

“They are forced to make new friends and are pushed out of their comfort zone all the while having to learn about a new team member’s strengths and weaknesses,” said Robinson.

At the end of the day, the teams received medals and prizes for the top hockey girl and boy, top netball player and top rugby player.

“It was an absolute pleasure to welcome so many primary school participants and their supportive parents to the school,” said school principal Allan Wilke.

He added participation and excellence in sport is what they strive to achieve at their school and these Grade 6 players showed how much potential they have as well as their love for the sports they play.

To add to the vibe on the day, the netball coaches selected a team of Grade 6 netball players who competed in a 10-minute game against Rand Park’s first team to give them an idea of how they will progress over the years once they play high school netball.

This game was an exciting one as parents and spectators cheered for the Grade 6 players to show their mettle.
