Joburg’s best bowlers compete at Linden
LINDEN – Bowlers from across Joburg test their skills against each other at four-week-long tournament.
The sun shone generously down on bowlers for four fun-filled Saturdays during Linden Bowling Club’s Annual Winter Tournament.
A whopping 22 teams of four players each competed at the club for ultimate glory, with finals being held on 22 June.
Six of these teams were from the hosting club, the rest were from other clubs affiliated to the Johannesburg Bowls Association.

While the tournament was highly competitive, a fair and sportsmanlike spirit prevailed every time the bowlers took to the two greens. Regularly, encouraging cheers and high-fives rung out for all to hear.
The bowlers made it even less about the sport when they together raised R3 000 for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).
According to its website, the non-profit organisation fights cancer by supporting research into it, educating the public about its symptoms, and providing care and support to those affected.
“The bowling was of a high standard, of a provincial standard even,” said event-organising committee member, Linda Hampton.
“The highlight for me was the atmosphere and spirit in which the game was played. The weather was great too. We did prize-giving a bit differently this year and it also went down well.”

Linden had further cause to celebrate the tournament as one of their sides won overall.
Marc and Esme Haley, Gianni Fontenella and Roddy Snyman proved the best of the best of Joburg’s bowlers.
While these inviduals left with the widest smiles on their faces, and a cash prize, it was Linden Bowling Club and the sport of bowls as a whole that won out after such a successful tournament.
