Olivedale on the ball

OLIVEDALE – Tennis events company hosts match days for youngsters at Olivedale Tennis Club.

Get Set Play is back hosting its green ball mini masters match play sessions at Olivedale Tennis Club.

Between 25 and 30 youngsters attend these tennis classes each week to play matches against each other and undergo coaching.

“We have had an incline in numbers of players since the lockdown,” said Get Set Play owner, Rensia de Lange.

“There has not been extracurricular sports at schools and parents want their children to stay active, while safe. We have had a few coaches join [our partner company Kinetik Tennis Academy] and they have helped us with all the coaching and overseeing the tournaments.”

De Lange believed tennis was a safe sport to play during a pandemic, with Tennis South Africa’s lockdown level-specific regulations.

Because they are adjusted in each lockdown level, the restrictions balance safety precautions and the freedom to play.

Temperatures are taken, people are screened, face masks are worn when not playing, equipment is sanitised and social distancing is maintained.

“Our goal this year is to grow the programme and attract players from different areas,” De Lange added.

“We want our players to grow in confidence and play in bigger tournaments, which we also aim to host this year.”

There are two sessions each Saturday – one from 7am to 9am and the second from 9am to 11am.

Along with Kinetik Tennis Academy, players at Get Set Play have been using the online Universal Tennis Rating system to compare their skills to players across the world from U14 to professional level.

The global rating system uses results from matches across age, gender, geography and skill level to fairly accurately rate players against each other.
