Randburg Bowls Club’s outstanding success on the greens continues, with club member David Smith being crowned men’s open singles champion at the prestigious Gauteng Open Singles Competition.

The tournament is widely regarded as one of the largest and most competitive events on the national bowls calendar, attracting top bowlers from across Gauteng, including provincial representatives, inter-district players, national champions, and international competitors. Smith’s victory is the latest highlight in what has been a stellar year for both the player and the Boskruin-based club, which has enjoyed success at all levels of the game, from junior development through to national and provincial competition.

On his route to the title, Smith produced a number of outstanding performances, most notably defeating international bowler Brendan Ferns in a highly competitive semi-final. He then advanced to the final to face Brian Dial, of Bedfordview, an accomplished inter-district bowler who has also represented South Africa at a seniors international competition in Cyprus.

The final was played in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere and showcased bowls of the highest quality. Smith settled quickly and established an early advantage, building a commanding lead before Dial fought his way back into the contest. Despite the pressure, Smith maintained his composure and produced crucial bowls at key moments to secure a well-deserved 21–13 victory and the Gauteng open singles title.

Reflecting on his achievement, Smith said he is pleased with the result, and that he is grateful for everyone who contributed to his achievement. “You don’t win a tournament of this calibre without facing quality opposition. Brendan and Brian both played exceptionally well and made me work hard for every shot. I’d like to thank Randburg Bowls Club for the support I’ve received throughout the season and my fellow club members for their encouragement.”

Smith’s success is particularly significant given his recent return to competitive bowls after spending several years away from the game. Since making his comeback, he has consistently featured among the top performers in major competitions and has now added one of Gauteng’s premier singles titles to an already impressive list of achievements this season.

Randburg Bowls Club manager Dale Gerrans praised Smith’s achievement and highlighted the club’s growing strength in competitive bowls. “We are incredibly proud of David and what he has achieved. Winning a competition of this calibre requires tremendous skill, determination, and consistency, and David demonstrated all three throughout the tournament.
