Kendoka celebrates

BOSKRUIN – The courageous Kendoka graduates to 1st Dan at Shi Hoko Kendo Dojo.

A local kendo dojo is celebrating the graduation of one of its most dedicated practitioners to 1st dan.

Kadima Kazadi is also sponsored by the Shi Hoko Kendo Dojo in Boskruin, as he is an outreach student and began his training at a Hillbrow dojo in 2018.

“Ever since my childhood, there have been skills in me that I could not comprehend, a skill which I was ignorant of,” Kazadi said.

“As a child I was interested in playing with a stick or a branch. l would demonstrate what l saw on TV, as in an imaginary fight.”

Kazadi joined Shi Hoko Kendo Dojo and realised his potential under senior instructor, 3rd dan sensei Wendy Vermeulen.

“This is a huge accomplishment, as Kadima travels two hours to reach the dojo each time,” Vermeulen said.

“He will grade for 2nd dan this year. Every competition he ever entered, he has taken medals. In his first competition, he put on the armour for the first time in the parking lot before, and he went up against a 3rd dan, but was not deterred.”

She added she is very proud of her fighter as he has displayed a courageous samurai spirit.

In explanation, Kazadi said the martial art teaches more than technique, but also ‘discipline, heroic courage, compassion, respect, honesty and sincerity, duty and loyalty, honour and integrity.

“Kendo has played a huge role in my personal life. lt has boosted my courage and spirit,” Kazadi concluded.
