40-year-old bowls tournament is a hit again at Old Parks

The tournament saw players from across the country connect at the sports club in Bordeaux for five weeks.

A tournament running for about 40 years went off without a hitch, yet again, at Old Parktonian Bowls Club.

The five-week long Olea Trips Tournament saw people from as far as Sun City make their way to the Bordeaux venue to play. By the time the final day arrived, on August 19, players were sad to say goodbye but made the most of a vibrant and sunny Saturday morning.

Music, drinks and long chats between ends, or between those not playing games at the time, characterised this.

“The torunament was like a general get-together for many old friends,” said Bill Bowen, chairperson of bowls at old Parks. “It was very successful in that we raised a substantial amount of money for the club, but it was also great to see everyone and spend time together on the green.”

The social aspect notwithstanding, bowlers gave their all and played as competitively as any tournament warrants. Some teams featured players from different clubs, such was the nature of their friendships and desire to win.

The bowls club will host its AGM on August 27, before taking a break in September and October. The new bowls season will begin in November. The annual trips tournament has already been confirmed for next year.
