Contemporary dancers on the rise
RANDBURG - The Dance World Cup qualifying round which took place from the 15 to the 16 March helps three contemporary dancers realize they were made to dance.
Three pupils from the Christian School of the Arts in Randburg, a high performance training center represented their school at the Dance World Cup at the qualifying round in Pretoria from the 15 to the 16 March.
This prestigious international dance event took place at the Atterbury Theatre. Dancers of all styles and age groups entered the competition in order to get a chance to compete at the World Cup finals in Portugal.
Thula Cruickshank (16) who came second for his contemporary piece and third for his jazz choreography said the competition allowed him to expand his dance skills.
The 15-year-old Nicholas Lai who has only been doing contemporary dancing for a year, stated that the dance style has made him want to become a better dancer and continue to do contemporary dancing. “I placed fourth for my contemporary piece and third for my showdance piece. I will do better next time,” expressed Lai.
Kristen Ewart (16) placed first for her jazz piece and fourth for contemporary dance piece, said doing the competition was simply a way for her to extend her love for dancing. “Dance allows me to tap into my emotions especially contemporary dancing, because it is a beautiful form of dance which must be articulated with feeling,” said Ewart.
Although the three dancers did not qualify to go to Portugal for the finals there are pleased with their achievement and will continue to perfect their craft. “I hope that someday we will be successful dancers and give back to the youth sharing our knowledge of this amazing talent,” concluded Cruickshank.
