Local YouTuber reflects on content creation journey
OLIVEDALE – Local YouTuber Keyura Pather reflects on her content creation journey.
Final year BSc student Keyura Pather (20) started her YouTube channel in April last year during the national lockdown.
Pather viewed her channel as a way to document various aspects of her life, help people learn about topics such as sustainability and an outlet to express her creativity.
“I have always been a creative and talkative person but with lockdown I didn’t have my usual creative outlets or many people to talk to and discuss things with,” said Pather.
“…filming and editing my YouTube videos helped me gain a new skill to keep me busy.”
Pather is currently an environmental ecology and conservation student at the University of the Witwatersrand. This informed her advocacy for tackling climate change and the conservation of endangered species, especially here in South Africa.
“We have one of the highest proportions of the world’s total species [both plants and animals]. This is why I have also opened up a small business about a month or so ago called The Eco Key which is about supplying eco-friendly, plastic alternatives, educating people about climate change and more will soon follow.”

As a student of the Indian classical dance form, Bharatanatyam, Pather has trained since the age of two.
“I am a part of the Sri Sathya Sai International Organisation, in which among other things is the practice of five human values – truth, peace, right conduct, non-violence and love are adopted into our lifestyle.”
Pather began the aspect of study tips on her channel to help all who had asked her for advice on how to study effectively after her achievements in matric. Another topic explored by the YouTuber is mindfulness. “I started doing journaling, meditation and yoga on a daily basis and it changed my life in this past year. So when I saw how much it helped me, I just knew I had to share it with others who may need it.”
The dance videos on her channel were inspired by some of her favourite Bollywood songs or movies and her sustainability videos are inspired by her passion to inform everyone about climate change and how they could help by becoming more greener in their lifestyle choices.
“I would just like to tell the readers a quote by Picasso, ‘Everything you can imagine is real’, so whatever you see yourself doing or you want to do, just go for it because you never know when it can become your reality. Continue to dream and do everything your heart desires because life is too short to worry about failing. Rather use your time to keep trying.”
