A food drive for the hospitality industry

WARD 98 – The initiative was held at the Windsor West Shelter and it saw many within the industry attend.

Lockdown Level 4 has had a huge impact on businesses across the province especially for those working in the hospitality industry.

Many restaurants within our community have closed their doors and as such, have left their employees without a source of income.

Recently, Ward 98 councillor Beverly Weweje was part of a food parcel drive, held at Windsor West Shelter, geared towards those in this particular industry who due to the lockdown had little means to feed their families.

Weweje said it was clear that due to the lockdown announcement, many people would be stranded in terms of income and food security.

On the day, food parcels that consisted of rice, maize meal, and vegetables such as butternut, carrots, potatoes and onions to name a few, were given out. It was important to make sure the food parcel consisted of a healthy mixture of food that not only filled the stomach, but provided nutrients too. The Let’s Work initiative was also part of the drive and provided hot soup on the day too.

Word about the initiative was spread through word of mouth and WhatsApp groups. For this drive to be as successful as it was, was all due to the community members of wards 88 and 98. “Residents really did show up and assist,” said Weweje.

She added that it was great to see that many people of the restaurant industry collected food parcels. The names all those who came to collect a parcel were taken and they each supplied information on which restaurant they worked at. Displaced people were also assisted on the day and served with soup.

Weweje praised the community for their help towards the drive which proved to be very successful.
