Bauer always knew he would be a comedian

The host of Thirst Comedy every Wednesday evening in Greenside knew early in his life that he would be a comedian.

Jediael Bauer (29) from Windsor East learnt early in his life that he would be a comedian.

“I started comedy when I was 13 years old. I am originally from Durban and moved to Gauteng when I was 21,” he said.
He reckoned that he was always being funny, making witty and sarcastic comments. At the time he didn’t take things too seriously and that has always been his personality.
Bauer was brought up in a church where there was a lot of talent and exposure. He recalled that one day the youth team at the church organised an entertainment function. “It was a diversity show and they introduced a stand-up comedy.”

According to him, it wasn’t a big thing until they asked him if he could do ice-breakers before the show starts, as they were doing a comedy segment of the show.
“I refused I was like I don’t want to do that, I am shy in front of all these people.”
On the night of the show, as he was sitting in the audience section with his friends, the comedy segment arrived. and as they started they called him on stage. “I was like oh, that’s me. That’s my name and all my friends are like cheering me on. I was like, I can’t refuse now and they already put me in the spotlight and I had to go,” he recalled.
He subsequently told a few jokes and it went quite well. “I got paid. I was like this is cool.”

After the show, he was paid R300. A few days later another church approached him and offered him a place in their show, and they paid him R350.
He said many comedians help him grow as he performed in various events with them.\

Bauer, a salesperson in the refrigeration industry, said he always had a passion for the entertainment industry. “I’ve never stopped. I’ve been doing drama; I have a photography company and visuals company with some of the friends called Horizon Entertainment who are funding Thirst Comedy.”
He said although Covid-19 crippled the industry, it made him realise there is a gap in the market and that there isn’t a lot of comedy in the country. “I used that to my advantage and I started my comedy show which takes place every Wednesday in Greenside.”

He said his goal, which he is already acting on, is to become one of the best comedians in the country, securing roles on TV shows and focusing on his craft.
“I do other gigs in Melville, Braamfontein and I have done a lot of gigs in Rustenburg, Soweto and Durban.”
