Honeydew Police arrest 72 overnight around Cosmo City
A total 72 people were arrested overnight around the police station.
Honeydew Police arrested 72 people during a recent Okae Molao operation around their Cosmo City satellite police station.
Media liaison officer, Warrant Officer Dave Stanton said these productive results lead to tangible crime prevention.
“One of the focusses was escalated to stopping and testing motorbikes,” he explained, citing a sharp increase in thefts of these reported to the station.
“Motorbikes are seen as easy targets because, unlike motor vehicles, they do not have to be started first and then driven away, but instead can be carried away or loaded onto a means of transport. Also, they are very easy to strip and be used for spare parts.”
Between 18:00 on the Saturday and 02:00 on the Sunday of the operation, 55 vehicles were searched, six were tested and 171 people were searched.
The operation also saw seven shopping centres, three crime hotspots, 11 liquor outlets and four petrol stations visited and patrolled.
60 people were arrested as undocumented persons in contravention of section 49.1 of the immigration act.
Eight people were arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence, two more were arrested for dealing in drugs and one person was arrested for drunken driving and theft.

“It is very important that motorbikes are not left outside at night,” Stanton added.
“We have even heard of motorbikes being carried out of people’s locked yards and lifted over walls. If you cannot afford satellite tracking or don’t have a room or garage to park your motorbike in at night, it is strongly suggested that you take alternative measures to safeguard your motorbike.”
These include putting a thick chain through the wheels of the motorbike and fastening it to a fixed object.
Owners can also look online for affordable theft prevention devices such as disc brake alarms that cost around R350.
