SPARK Randburg High learners excel at Spelling Bee

SPARK Randburg High’s Summer Ramkissoon and Tshegofatso Mnisi impressed at the Gauteng Spelling Bee, earning spots in the upcoming national finals.

Two SPARK Randburg High learners will represent Gauteng at the national Spelling Bee finals after performing well in the provincial round.

Grade 10 learner Summer Ramkissoon placed second, and Grade 9 learner Tshegofatso Mnisi placed third at the South African Spelling Bee Gauteng Competition held at the IIE MSA campus in Roodepoort.

They were part of a group of 11 scholars from the school who competed in the senior phase category. Both will travel to Sun City in December for the national finals.

SPARK Randburg High principal Mbasa Javu said the result reflected the school’s focus on hard work and academic achievement.

“Our scholars are high achievers with a passion for excelling both inside and outside the classroom,” said Javu. “They embraced this opportunity and dedicated hours to preparation.”

All 11 learners received learning materials to help them prepare. These were shared with parents as well, so the learners could practise at school and home.

“Our teachers and the assistant principal of academics played a big role, but it was the learners’ commitment and determination that led to this result,” said Javu.

The African Spelling Bee South Africa challenges learners beyond simple memory. It tests their understanding of words, pronunciation, and grammar.

Javu said the school was proud of all 11 participants and confident that Ramkissoon and Mnisi would continue to shine.

“We wish them the best as they prepare to compete against the best in the country.”
