Seren House learners support babies through charity.

Through a hands-on donation drive, Seren House learners are learning compassion while providing essential supplies and support to abandoned children at Florida Baby House.

Seren House Cottage School is once again showing its heart, as its Grade 7 prefects and Senior Campus Student Representative Council (SRC) prepare for another donation drive to support the Florida Baby House.

This marks the fourth year the school has partnered with the home, which cares for abandoned babies. What began as a simple charity initiative has grown into a tradition of care and connection. Each year, the learners collect essential items, secondhand goods, and other much-needed supplies. But they do more than just drop off donations; they visit the babies and spend time at the facility, building relationships and learning more about the children’s lives.

“Every year our prefects and SRC look forward to this charity drive, and they make a big effort to collect the clothes and supplies,” said Haseena Vally, who helps organise the collection. “Over the last four years, we have seen many of the children at the home grow up. Some have been adopted, and we hear some of the sadder stories, too. Not only does this initiative provide support to the babies at the home, but it also gives our students a deeper understanding of community needs and how even small actions can make a big difference.”

The school, which opened seven years ago, is a small IEB independent school with one class per grade in the primary phase and two per grade in high school. Although small in size, the school’s annual drive continues to have a big impact, thanks to the efforts of the learners and strong support from parents.

The school’s principal, Dr Eirwen Oswald, said the drive reflected the school’s broader values. “We are incredibly proud of our SRC and Grade 7 prefects for their outstanding leadership and drive, and we deeply appreciate our parent body. The Florida Baby House collection has truly become one of our most important charitable activities. Seeing our students develop such deep empathy and social responsibility through hands-on engagement is exactly what we hope to achieve at Seren House.”

Kindness, loyalty, and social responsibility are key parts of the school’s teaching approach. And through projects like this, Seren House continues to raise children who care not just in words, but in action.
