Residents of Kya Sands gathered at the Strydompark Home Affairs office on July 28 to raise concerns about unemployment and to request support from officials. The group asked that Home Affairs accompany them to local firms in search of job opportunities.

Community leader Norman Ramukumba said the group had come together to highlight their struggles. “We are for one purpose, and that is we are looking for jobs,” he said, alleging that many firms employ undocumented workers. “So we as the community are pleading with Home Affairs to come and assist us so that we can be able to work and provide for ourselves and our families.”

Ramukumba added that residents had been raising the issue for some time. “We have been pleading with Home Affairs for a long time now, but today we were able to speak to them, and they promised that on Monday, 3 August, they will come with us and assist us.”

He said the community wanted stronger enforcement of immigration laws. “As the community of Kya Sands, we are saying enough is enough with illegal immigrants and people that do not respect our laws. Let them go back and fix their own country, just as we are trying to do the same for ours.”

Another community leader, Carltoon Motiri Mafa, confirmed that the office manager had agreed to put together a team to accompany residents on the planned campaign.

Residents said they hope the joint effort with Home Affairs will help open up job opportunities for local job seekers who have long felt overlooked in their own community.
