Woman dies in horror R28 head-on collision

Male companion seriously injured - amputation of his limbs a possibility.

A woman was killed and man severely injured after their vehicle collided head-on with oncoming traffic on the R28 Krugersdorp/ Randfontein Road on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries.

“The driver (a man believed to be in his 30s) of the Cherry QQ (white) was travelling from Randfontein and seemed to have lost control of the vehicle before it collided into oncoming traffic (a Mercedez Benz),” Andrew Elliot, Assistant Director of the Gauteng Emergency Services (EMS) confirmed.

“He sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital to be treated for further injuries. His injuries is so severe that the chances of him losing his limbs are likely.

“Despite efforts by a number of paramedics, the passenger, a woman believed to be in her 30s unfortunately died on scene having sustained severe upper body injuries.”

The accident occurred before 5pm with traffic heavily backed up for hours.

Emergency services who assisted on the scene includes ER24, Netcare 911, Gauteng EMS, the West Rand District Municipality, EmergiMed and Randfontein Emergency Services as well as local tow truckers.
