Gauteng police sound the alarm on escalating crime trends in Randfontein

Violent crimes, including hijackings, burglaries and assaults, continue to rise in the area.

Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has issued a stern warning to residents in the Randfontein and Mohlakeng precincts following a concerning rise in violent crime in the area.

Speaking during the recent Operation Shanela meeting in Toekomsrus, the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner highlighted several crime trends, noting a significant increase in serious offences. Among the most prevalent are theft of motor vehicles, burglaries and hijackings.

Mthombeni also raised concern over cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, describing the trend as alarming and indicative of escalating violence within communities.

“These crimes not only threaten the safety of residents but also create a climate of fear,” Mthombeni said, urging the public to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding themselves and their property.

He encouraged residents to avoid situations that may expose them to risk, such as leaving vehicles unattended in unsecured areas or failing to implement basic home security measures. Community members were also urged to be aware of their surroundings at all times, particularly when travelling or entering and exiting their homes.

Mthombeni further emphasised the importance of co-operation in the fight against crime, calling on residents to report suspicious activities and work closely with local police structures. He noted that partnerships between law enforcement and the community remain a critical tool in addressing crime effectively.

“Law enforcement agencies,” he said, “will continue to intensify operations in identified hotspots, including visible policing, stop-and-search operations and targeted interventions aimed at curbing criminal activity.”

Residents have been urged to make use of available communication channels with police and to participate in community policing initiatives as part of broader efforts to restore safety and stability in the area.

As authorities respond to these growing concerns, the message remains clear: Vigilance, co-operation and preventative measures are key in tackling the rise in crime.
