A man in his 30s died and four other people including a child, 4, were critically injured following a heavy collision between a bakkie and motor vehicle on the R28 near Westonaria on Saturday.

ER 24 paramedics say on arrival at the scene they discovered that the deceased man had succumbed to multiple injuries and was a passenger inside the bakkie while the driver had sustained critical injuries in the collision.

The sedan was carrying a woman and four-year-old child who both sustained critical injuries and a man who had moderate injuries.

The injured patients were stabilised on scene and transported to various hospitals in the area.

The incident is under investigation.
