Gauteng premier in town for HIV campaign
Orphans and vulnerable children have also been greatly affected by the pandemic.
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane together with members of the Gauteng Aids Council (GAC) will visit the community of Bekkersdal in a door-to-door awareness campaign on 25 June.
This forms part of their ongoing effort to intensify the fight against the spread of HIV and Aids in the province and provide support to orphans and vulnerable children.
According to Makonyane, Bekkersdal has been identified as a community that is gravely affected by unemployment and health related challenges since the closure of mining industries in the area.
“In our war against the pandemic, not only will we visit residents in general, we will also be visiting child-headed homes in the community.
“It has come to our attention that orphans and vulnerable children have also been greatly affected by the pandemic by either living with it or having lost guardians owing to it,” says Makonyane.
She adds that during the visit, they will also review the management of programmes that are in place aimed at fighting the pandemic as well as review the progress made by the government in addressing the pandemic effectively.
It is only then that other plans of improvement can be proposed and carried out if need be.
