Four women and five men have been arrested following a series of hijacking in the West Rand.
This after Randfontein residents took to BBM and other social media platforms on 10 October warning that there are people hijacking motorists on the R28 near the Uncle Harry’s roadhouse.
Police were quick to respond and by the time the Herald arrived at the scene to investigate the allegations, there were already around seven police vehicles on the scene.
It is understood that the suspects are part of a syndicate operating specifically on the R28.
The women in question dress up in revealing clothes and stand on the side of the road pretending to seek a lift.
Once a vehicle stops to offer them a lift, a group of armed men would emerge and hijack the motorists at gunpoint.
According to a police officer at the scene who does not wish to be identified, the suspects would park their vehicle at the Uncle Harry’s service station and walk to their hotspots to carry out their acts.
Meanwhile, the Herald can reveal that the gang may be linked to other hijackings in the area.
According to reports posted by residents on the social media platforms, the suspects would throw an object into the road forcing motorists to stop.
Armed men would then emerge and force the motorists to give up their valuables as well as their ATM cards and pin numbers.
One of the women would then go and draw cash from the victim’s account.
