R28 accident due to drunk driving

It is alleged that the driver of the Polo Vivo was driving under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.

Another accident occurred on the R28 in Randfontein when an alleged drunken driver travelling in a Volkswagen Polo Vivo smashed into the back of a Ford Laser carrying four passengers including a 4-year-old child.

This was on 16 November at approximately 5pm.

According to Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo, both vehicles were travelling from Randfontein towards Westonaria when the incident occurred.

“It is alleged that the driver of the Polo Vivo was driving under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.

“He drove into the back of the Ford Laser which was travelling in the left lane of the road,” says Mampondo.

He adds that fortunately, no fatalities were recorded at the scene however the driver of the Polo Vivo was seriously injured and had to be transported to a nearby hospital.

Three occupants in the Ford Laser came out unharmed and only one had to be treated for back and neck injuries.

Investigations at the scene indicated that the man in the Polo was travelling at high speed when the incident occurred.

Empty cans of alcohol were also found in his vehicle.
