West Rand’s door-to-door campaign a success

This initiative was aimed at bridging the information gap that exists in informal settlement with regards to government services.

Communication officers from the different municipalities within the West Rand joined hands with other government communications teams during a massive door-to door campaign at the Master Plot informal settlement in Wilbotsdal on 14 November.

This was to create awareness about existing government initiatives which aim to assist people from all walks of life.

According to West Rand District Municipality spokesperson Refentse Mangope, he, together with his co-workers decided to ditch their offices on the day to do some work in this local community.

“This initiative was aimed at bridging the information gap that exists in informal settlements with regards to government services and products that are there to assist residents from all walks of life.

“During this time, we visited 150 houses, handing out pamphlets and having informative discussions with residents.

“It was sad to see that some of the single parents in the area have no access to services provided by the Social Services, Home Affairs and the Health departments – especially where health care and family planning is concerned.

“This goes to show that there really is a need for regular visits by the relevant departments in such areas,” says Mangope.

He adds that information is key and that is the message they tried to spread on the day.
