No more dull gardens after great rain
With so much rain during the past weeks, everything is in flower and now is the perfect time for seed sowing.
Randfontein has had so much rain during the last couple of weeks that everything is in flower.
Gardens are all looking so green and all the plants seemed to be so much brighter than usual in colour.
With Christmas less than a month away, Natalie Rowles, from the Gardening Gazette thought she could get in her last bit of vegetable and herbs seed sowing this year, before it is too late with holidays on hand.
According to Natalie, she always purchases organic and heirloom seeds, and had a quick look which seeds to sow.
“With the constant heat and wind we have experienced lately, I would suggest trying to use my method of sowing these seeds, which seemed to offer a better chance to survive the heat – the lazy way method of mine,” says Natalie.
Firstly, purchase some cat litter trays – two would be enough to start this method – one bottom tray will hold two seedling trays filled with a mixture of compost, potting soil and river sand, well mixed, leveled and sown with your seeds.
Then, place the seedling trays in the bottom tray and fill it approximately halfway up the seedling tray’s width with water.
Cover with the top tray and place these trays in a morning shade position.
Place half a brick or a pot plant on top of the top tray so the wind will not blow it off.
Remove the two seedling trays after three days, and discard the stale water, replace again with fresh water and seedling trays as before.
After doing it the second time, the little seedlings should have germinated, discard stale water and replaced with fresh water as before. If the seedlings are big enough to be transplanted, do not cover with the top tray, but leave it for another 3 days to grow stronger in the morning shade.
When big enough, transplant the small plants in the same mixture of soil as seedling trays were filled with.
Handle the tiny plants by its leaves and not by the stem.
