Westgold Primay: Where champions are made

From introducing children of all backgrounds to rugby to guiding players from U8 level, coach Rudolph de Bruyn is shaping both talent and character at Westgold Primary – with nine of his boys already earning Golden Lions colours.

At Westgold Primary School, coach Rudolph de Bruyn is doing far more than developing rugby players – he is shaping futures.

As the driving force behind the U13 rugby team, De Bruyn has built a programme based on opportunity, discipline and inclusivity. His goal is to introduce children from all backgrounds to rugby and create opportunities for growth and development through sport.

He has coached many of the current first team players since their U8 days and has played a key role in their development, not only as athletes but also as individuals. His long-term involvement has helped instil strong values in the boys that extend beyond the rugby field into everyday life. Respect, accountability, perseverance and teamwork are among the core principles he emphasises.

One of his proudest achievements was seeing nine of his players selected for the Golden Lions – a milestone that reflects the quality of coaching and development within the team.

“We play in the Sub Super League. As it stands now, if we win next week, we will finish second on the log. If we lose, we could finish third or fourth, depending on the outcome of the game between RAM and Monument Primary. But we are going to the playoffs, where you make your own luck, and the bounce of the ball on the day can make all the difference,” said De Bruyn.

I also need to give credit to my fellow coaches at the school, the principal Christo Hugo, team manager Michelle van der Merwe, as well as assistant coach Thabo Letlhake, who all contribute to the success of the team in different ways,” added the coach.

De Bruyn also strongly believes that parental involvement plays an important role in a child’s success. He encourages parents to be present and engaged so they can witness firsthand the life skills rugby develops – including discipline, resilience, leadership and confidence – as well as the opportunities the sport can create for their children.

Through passion, consistency and a clear vision, De Bruyn continues to make a lasting impact at Westgold Primary, demonstrating that rugby is not only a game but also a powerful tool for growth and transformation.
