Municipal worker caught putting up ANC posters

An man dressed in work clothes sporting the Randfontein Local Municipality logo was spotted along Kenneth Road putting up ANC posters.

A man seemingly working for the Randfontein Local municipality was caught red-handed putting up ANC posters on street poles along Kenneth Road and Homestead Avenue in Randfontein during working hours.

The herald offices was inundated with calls from furious motorists on 31 April and upon investigation found the man dressed in a municipal work uniform (sporting a Randfontein Local Municipality logo) casually unloading ANC posters from a bakkie and putting them up on street poles.

Having spotted a herald photographer trying to get clear pictures of him, the man did everything in his power to conceal his face.

When confronted, the man vehemently denied that he works for the Randfontein Local Municipality.

Questions about why he was wearing a municipal work uniform left the man at a loss for words and eventually caused him to loose his patience with the persistent  journalist, threatening her and telling her to “get out of his face.”

The Herald has since spoken to the West Rand District Municipality spokesperson Dennis Mangope who condemns this and says that the ANC does not condone the use of state or municipal resources to campaign for the elections.

“It is really unfortunate that an incident of this nature has caused such misunderstanding.

“In this instance, there are people who used to work for Municipalities and they still keep their overalls.

“They will normally use them when they do any community related work and it is possible that the person in question felt more comfortable to do ANC work in a municipal work uniform,” says Mangope who is adamant that local government in Randfontein does not use municipal workers to carry out any campaigns for the ANC.
