Driverless car crashes into doctor’s office

A car without a driver smashed into a local surgery in one of the more bizarre accidents so far this year.

The windows of well-known surgery in Randgate were left shattered after a bizarre accident.

A driverless car smashed into the building near the corners of Union and Van Deventer Streets on 6 May at approximately 11am.

An eyewitness who does not wish to be named told the herald that he had seen the car parked in front of a nearby liquor store shortly before it crashed into the building.

It is suspected that the car’s handbrake was not engaged.

According to the owner of the car, who also insisted on not being identified, someone had tried to steal the car, but failed.

The would-be thief then apparently left the car out of gear with the handbrake disengaged when he fled from the scene, causing the car to coast down Union Street, across Van Deventer Street, onto the sidewalk and coming to a standstill after crashing into the surgery.

How the car managed to miss traffic and other parked cars on this busy stretch of road remains a mystery.

The herald tried to speak to the owner of the surgery with regard to the incident but he refused to comment.
