Affri Sports Tigers host Catchball Clinic at Greenhills Stadium
Visiting teams from across Gauteng gather in Rand West to demonstrate and share skills for an inclusive volleyball-derived sport.
Affri Sports Tigers introduced residents to Catchball when hosting a clinic at Greenhills Stadium on October 10.
The clinic aimed to promote the sport in the West Rand community, bringing together enthusiasts and visiting teams from Thembisa, Soweto and Pretoria to demonstrate the game and share knowledge with local participants.
According to Affri Sports Tigers chairperson Tiny Buthelezi, the visiting teams helped familiarise participants with the rules and techniques of Catchball, giving them an opportunity to learn more about the game and experience it firsthand.
Catchball is an inclusive team sport derived from volleyball, where players catch and throw the ball rather than hitting or bumping it over the net.
Buthelezi explained that one of the sport’s greatest strengths is its ability to bring people of different ages and backgrounds together, noting it is particularly attractive to women and older adults because it promotes physical activity, wellness, teamwork, friendship and social inclusion.
The sport can accommodate participants from around 12 years old to 70 and beyond, depending on their individual fitness levels and abilities, making it an accessible option for people looking to stay active while building social connections.
For Affri Sports Tigers, hosting the clinic marked a step towards creating new sporting opportunities for residents and encouraging greater participation in physical activity across the West Rand.
