Chef students cook up a storm

Westcol College joins forces with Randfontein Golf Course to expose students to the culinary industry.

The Randfontein Golf and Country Club recently joined forces with Randfontein Westcol College to expose their chef students to the culinary industry.

According to the Programme Head of Hospitality and Chefs Academy at Westcol College, Marietjie Scholtz, Westcol and the Randfontein Golf Club will work hand in hand to give their hospitality students the much-needed exposure to the real-life scenarios of this demanding industry.

Scholtz further explains that their certificate students are making use of the club’s facilities and and serve their clients on a weekly basis as a work-based classroom.

“This is the perfect opportunity for our students and we cannot thank the Randfontein Golf Club enough for their involvement in these students’ careers and training,” says Scholtz.

She adds that the students also will use the club to execute their practical exams.

According to the events coordinator of the Randfontein Golf and Country Club, Lillian Swanepoel, there are three venues at the club that are forgotten and not in use anymore. The Westcol hospitality students will organise an event to re-open and introduce these venues to the community.

“The students have been divided into three groups and each group will get the opportunity to re-open a venue. This includes creating a full menu for their event, drawing up a budget and preparing all the meals on their menu themselves. This project also should be sustainable and cost effective,” Swanepoel explains.

She adds that this event will determine their marks for the college’s practical exams.

The three venues that the students have to re-open and introduce include the snooker room, the Jamison bar and the Chairman’s lounge.

“We really are looking forward to working with the students from Westcol College and cannot wait to see what events they have planned as part of their practical exams,” says Swanepoel.
