Bekkersdal leaders respond to deadline

"We have faith that Mamabolo will change the dynamics of this township."

The Greater Westonaria Concerned Residents Association (GWRA) has submitted their formal list of demands to the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Jacob Mamobolo.

This comes after they were ordered by the MEC to do so, giving them a deadline of 21 August.

According to the association’s spokesperson Thabang Wesi, “Leaders of the association met and formulated their demands some time ago. They say this merely was to put forward the concerns about tender irregularities in the company that procured a tender to fix the sewer lines.”

The concerns were raised on 15 August when Mamabolo was in the township.

“Apart from the issue of the tender irregularities, we have agreed with the MEC on issues regarding the formalisation of the township, upgrading recreational facilities as well as revamping the sewer network,” Wesi says.

“Other issues that have been tabled are those of the Bekkersdal stadium and the land needed for building houses.”

Wesi adds that the association has faith in Mamabolo who seems to be hard at work.

“We actually have faith that Mamabolo will change the dynamics of this township. He seems to be very committed to our concerns. It’s clear that he wants to see transformation. However, while we trust in him, I think that its important that we not count our chickens before they hatch,” says Wesi.
