ANC councillor in court for alleged corruption

Councilor accused of having sold free RDP houses for exorbitant amounts of more than R20 000.

ANC ward councillor Walter Plaatjie from Mogale City appeared in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on allegations of selling RDP houses.

Plaatjie is accused of illegally selling government houses, also known as RDP houses, in Mogale City as well as Rietvlei Extensions 2 and 3 to residents for exorbitant amounts.

According to information received from a reliable source known to the herald, Plaatjie allegedly sold RDP houses to residents for close to R26 000 and has received a deposit of R19 000 thus far.

“I’m not too certain about the details around the case but I do know that Plaatjie sold houses to residents for amounts over R20 000. One person bought the house and later was evicted after the rightful owner had approached the Department of Housing together with the police to investigate the alleged corruption,” says the man who adds that this is what led to Plaatjie’s arrest.

Plaatjie who is currently out on bail is set to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court again on 8 and 12 September.
