A 66-year-old man and resident of Randfontein was stabbed to death while on holiday with his wife in Amanzimtoti on Tuesday.

According to a statement, which local police released to the herald‘s sister newspaper South Coast Sun the man was mugged on the promenade on 9 September at around 3pm.

When the victim tried to fight off the assailant he sustained injuries to his arms and wrists. Two eyewitnesses saw the man making his way back to Montrose Flats where he succumbed to his injuries.

It is alleged that during the incident another witness tried to intervene. Subsequently the suspects fled with the man’s watch and his wallet.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha confirmed to the herald, “We were called out to the scene where we found a man who had collapsed and had succumbed to his injuries. He sustained multiple stab wounds to the hand, arms and upper body.

“Paramedics applied monitors but attempts failed to resuscitate him. He was declared dead on scene.

“It is believed the man had walked between 1,5km and 2km after sustaining the injuries. He collapsed in the parking area of Montrose Flats where he was staying.”

Botha confirmed that the deceased’s wife had told local reporters that they hail from Randfontein.
