No escape for alleged burglar

‘It is time for the community to stand together against crime in Randfontein’

In a remarkably heroic effort a resident took matters into his own hands and apprehended a suspect following a break-in at his parents-in-law’s house on Thursday.

The resident not only managed to apprehend the suspect, he recovered most of the stolen goods – a laptop, two cameras and jewellery.

According to business owner Michael Grobler, “I received an alarming phone call from my mother-in-law Annetjie Jacobs that there had been a break-in at the house”.

Fortunately no one was at home when it happened.

Grobler rushed to the house where a neighbour – who alerted the Jacobs’ – pointed in the direction in which three suspects had fled.

“My flight-fight instinct took over and I decided to give chase in my bakkie,” he explains.

“At a train station in Aureus a cyclist said he had spotted a man hiding in a storm-water ditch.”

Grobler then managed to apprehend the suspect, tied his hands with his belt and phoned the police. Two of the suspects unfortunately got away.

“It is time for the community to stand together against crime in Randfontein,” Grobler says. He urges homeowners to get to know their neighbours as this can be helpful in a sticky situation.

Randfontein Police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst will comment at a later stage.
