Toekies celebrates Children’s Day with fun walk
Randfontein Traffic Police and community take to the streets for Children's Day.
Saturday 8 November marked the beginning of the year’s highlight for the children of Toekomsrus.
The transnational non-profit church and charity, Arrowhead hosted a fun walk for the children of Toekomsrus in celebration of Children’s Day.
Children’s Day is recognised internationally and Universal Children Day is celebrated on 20 November every year.
The United Nations, originator of Children’s Day, suggested that all countries celebrate the day but on any appropriate day preferred by the country. South African celebrates Children’s Day on the first Saturday of November.
The day began with excited little faces gathering at Toekomsrus Stadium to be put into age groups and receive complimentary T-shirts and water bottles for the excursion across Toekomsrus.
Not long after being urged by traffic police and organisers, the children took to the streets with the Randfontein Traffic Police and a banner – which proved problematic due to the wind even for the strong men who agreed to carry it – to lead the way.
The walk was followed with demonstrations by the traffic police, emergency services, fire department and police. Lastly the children had a chance to replenish their energy levels, after which they played out all their gathered energy on the games provided by Arrowhead and sponsors.
Organiser and founder Candice Fick says the day was a great success and she hopes to have an even bigger turnout with the next Children’s Day event.
