Storm-water drain hazard alert

Municipality fails to live up to their promises.

A blocked storm-water drain once again caused havoc when three premises in Market Street were flooded during a recent heavy rainstorm in Kocksoord.

The storm-water drain that has been blocked for a year is claimed to cause the same problems each time a storm hits the area. Allegedly a truck damaged the concrete covering the drain, causing the street to flood.

The herald published an article on the drain in February 2014 in which the municipality claimed they didn’t have drain covers and therefore could not fix it.

In addition to this, the then spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor, Lucky Chiya said he would get back to the herald with comment, which he did not do.

“I call the municipality when it rains,” said Charmaine Fritz, a resident of Market Street. “Every time they promise to come and fix it. Each time we wait and nothing ever happens.”

“The water floods my house,” said Motsamai September, a neighbour of Fritz. “It rains al lot here, so this is a big problem.”
