Man critical after truck collision

'The engine of the bakkie had been ripped out.'

A collision between a truck and bakkie on the on the R54 approximately 35km outside Potchefstroom has left a 35-year-old man critically injured.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, “Paramedics, along with provincial services, arrived on the scene and found both vehicles stationary on the side of the road. The engine of the bakkie had been ripped out in the collision and was found lying a few metres away in the road.

“On assessment, paramedics found the lifeless body of the male driver lying slumped over the door of the bakkie. The patient was found to have sustained severe injuries to his head, chest and back and was in a critical condition.

Paramedics rapidly extricated the patient from the vehicle and provided him with advanced life support. Once treated, the patient was airlifted by a medical helicopter to a private hospital in Johannesburg for urgent attention.

“Fortunately no-one from the truck sustained any injuries.”

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
