Hollard Daredevil Run calls on West Rand men to join cancer awareness race

Men across the West Rand are invited to swap their workwear for purple Speedos to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer in October.

Florida Running Club is inviting men across the West Rand to swap their formal workwear for purple Speedos as they take part in the annual Hollard Daredevil Run to raise awareness about cancer and help save lives.

According to club chairperson Tessa Shellard, the Hollard Daredevil Run will take place on Friday, October 23, at the Discovery Bowling Club, with entries now open.

For the past 17 years, the men’s health movement has raised millions of rand for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa.

Supporting cancer education and screening

Funds raised through the event help support cancer education and awareness initiatives, particularly around prostate and testicular cancer.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, and the risk increases with age. While some men may experience symptoms such as difficulty urinating, a weak urine flow, blood in the urine or semen, or frequent urination, prostate cancer can also develop without obvious symptoms in its early stages.

This is why awareness and conversations about screening are important, particularly for men who may be at higher risk. A family history of prostate cancer and being older are among the factors that can increase a man’s risk.

The Daredevil Run aims to use its eye-catching purple Speedos and fun atmosphere to get men talking about health issues they may otherwise avoid discussing.

This year’s tagline, ‘Lekker balls, Lekker life!’, encourages men to take greater responsibility for their health by being aware of the warning signs, discussing screening with healthcare professionals and seeking medical advice when something does not feel right.

“It’s a truly wonderful cause as everyone has been affected by cancer somewhere in their lives,” said Shellard.

“We hope to encourage men to take their health seriously, all while having a bit of fun in the process.”

The run will start at 17:00, with participants encouraged to come dressed in their purple Speedos and ready to make a statement for men’s health.

Registration is available online at www.daredevilrun.com, with participants also able to purchase the event’s trademark purple Speedos.

Women are also encouraged to get involved by supporting participants at water stations, cheering on runners and helping spread awareness about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.
